Emerald the red dragon wakes up after a thousand year nap to find herself in a changed world. The humans have invented flying machines and are waging a massive war across the skies. By chance Emerald befriends a soldier and the two of them fall in love.

Love in the Age of Flight is a 2.5D on-rails shoot-em-up. Fly around the screen to dodge enemy attacks, and use your mouse to breathe fire on your enemies. Fly through rings to recover health and build a combo multiplier. Between missions, share erotic moments with your human partner and tend to your growing pregnancy.

The flying controls implement a simple Newtonian physics simulation. Use air resistance to your advantage: level out your wings to stay aloft, or tilt to the side to drop quickly. Tuck in your wings to turn more sharply. If you take damage, your wings won't be as effective, so be careful.

The default combat settings require a good understanding of where your target is in 3D space if you want to deal damage. The shadow of your crosshair on the ground is a good visual cue. There's also an "easier combat" option which keeps all enemies on the same 2D plane and reduces their health.

Controls:

  • Roll: A/D or Left/Right Arrows
  • Flap: Space, W, S, or the Up or Down Arrow
  • Aim: Mouse
  • Shoot: Left Mouse Button
  • Pause: Tab or Esc

It's very easy to miss the text cutscenes that appear when you fly, one flap-wing input and it just skips one. I'd recommend have a minimum waiting time for when the screen changes, or have to click on a button to make the text moves to the next.

The controls are really really too hard lol. I think if you just made the movement of the Dragon be linear on the screen from arrow keys it would just be more fun to play coz right now it's just frustrating? idk, the momentum really goes crazy and it's so hard to just fly upward sometimes? idk idk

Also it's also not clear why you needed depth, because the planes just stay static ? Why not just put them all at the same depth and as long as your mouse is dead on them it's a sure shot lol? If they were flying and their depth were constantly changing I could see the point of depth (though it would make it also a lot harder lol). Well maybe it happens later but I cant get past the second wave lol.

short lived playthrough: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1827577710 (sorry if my english is bad / i sound rude sometimes my bad)

I'll keep trying for a bit until i beat this second wave lol

edit: gg i beat the game https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1827588837

Thanks for the feedback! I’ve added an “easier combat” option to the title screen, which makes aiming much easier and reduces enemy health.

Do you plan to change the controls? It's pretty much impossible to finish as of now, because you combined 2 hard to controls mechanics at the same time: flying controls by rotating and aiming in 3d with 2D graphics. If there was only one of those 2, the game could be playable, but the 2 combined make it impossible: going through the circles are pretty difficult and avoiding the shoots is just going up and down in a corner; you keep missing the planes because you can't judge correctly how far the planes is.

If I am missing a point, tell me, but for me, passing the first part is already a miracle, so the second part is just a dream

Thanks for playing! I agree it’s too difficult. I have a few ideas to make it easier, but I’m not sure if I’m allowed to change stuff during the game jam judging period.

These are the strategies I’ve figured out so far for aiming:

  1. Keep Emerald close to the enemy you’re shooting at. If you’re exactly in front of the enemy, you’ll hit it by shooting straight ahead.
  2. You have a line of 5 crosshairs showing your shot trajectory in 3D space. Figure out which of those crosshairs is at the same “depth” as the target you’re shooting at, and use that one when aiming your shots. You might have to aim between two of the crosshairs if none line up exactly. You can figure out the depth of the crosshairs by seeing if they move in front of the target or behind it, or by looking at the shadows on the ground.

Also, as Emerald flies around the screen, you need to adjust your aim in the opposite direction to stay on target.

Here’s a gif demonstrating a fairly successful fight:

I’ve added an “easier combat” option on the title screen.

I don't think you can change the jam version, but you can do a post jam version.
